Great Dance

November 25th, 2008 by Mark Langton

The teen dance was a great success. According to the Akeley Police Department there were over 100 teens at the dance. In total the dance brought together two large boxes of canned goods to our local food shelf, and supplied local teens with a very good time. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible!

Steering Committee Meeting

November 20th, 2008 by Susanne Hinrichs

Just wanted to write about the Horizons Steering Committee that met Tuesday evening, November 18 at the Headwaters in Akeley.  The people at the Headwaters were so accomodating to us - they gave us our own area so we could conduct our meeting and refilled our coffee MANY times!  The group discussed the following items:

  • That the study circles are moving along with mostly great attendance and lively discussion.
  • The upcoming Action Forum will be held December 11, 2008 at the Senior Center.  Anyone in the community is invited to attend this, even if they didn’t participate in a study circle.  The evening will start with a free meal and move into sharing of key things that happened in their meetings and ideas from the study circles.  The ideas will be sorted and people who want to dig in, can volunteer for work on the short term ideas.  The big or long-term ideas will move onto the visioning process.  Arrive prepared for good food and great discussion!
  • LeadershipPlenty Trainers are needed.  Three people from the area of Akeley are needed to be trained as trainers of the LeadershipPlenty curriculum and bring the training back for the people of Akeley in January and February 2009.  An exciting opportunity for individuals and also the community!
  • Recruiting is taking place for community members to attend the Akeley LeadershipPlenty training in January or February.  Contact a steering committee member if you are interested in participating.

The fun group who attended the steering committee meeting were, George Lueck, Vernon & Beverly Peterson, Randall Morrison, Joshua and Kari Kietzman (and cute Kaydence), Bob Guelker of the Northwoods Press and me, Susanne Hinrichs.  I work as the U of M Extension community coordinator for the Akeley Horizons program.

Anyone interesting in being on the steering committee, please call one of the above mentioned members.  This group will guide the community as it goes through the Horizons program.

Tonight we met at the Menahga High School to learn about blogging for Horizons.  Other bloggers from Menahga and Sebeka were there, too. Yippee!!  I cannot wait to read all the entries over the next few months about Horizons and how it has affected the people of Akeley and the community itself.  Akeley has a great group of bloggers so far!  Angela, Rich, Mark, Janna and Vernon have learned to blog so far.  If you are reading this and being a blogger interests you, please comment to this entry!  I will contact you.  The more the merrier!

Welcome one, welcome all to my first blog. We are learning great deals at the blog training this evening. We had an excellent meal consisting of juicy pizza, crisp salad, mouth watering cookies, and a soda. Now after learning these skills we will be able to share more with the world about our community. Stay tuned for more exciting posts dealing with Akeley.
